Garlic Mashed Potatoes
These garlic mashed potatoes are creamy, buttery, and packed with rich, savory flavor. Fresh garlic is cooked right along with the potatoes until soft and mellow, then mashed in with butter and milk or cream for a smooth, fluffy texture and a gentle garlic flavor in every bite. They’re a classic side dish that pairs perfectly with roast chicken, steak, pork chops, or meatloaf, and they’re a must-have on holiday tables from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

- 3 ⅓ lbs red or russet potatoes peeled, rinsed, and thinly sliced
- 6-7 cloves fresh garlic peeled and minced
- 1 large can evaporated milk can size not specified in the original recipe
- 1 stick butter
- 1 tablespoon salt for cooking water, plus more to taste
- black pepper to taste
Peel and rinse the potatoes. Thinly slice them into a large pot. Cover with water and add 1 tablespoon salt. Place over medium-high heat.
While the potatoes begin heating, peel and mince the garlic. Add it to the pot with the potatoes.
Bring to a boil. Cook until the potato slices pierce easily with a fork and begin to break apart.
Turn off the heat and drain the potatoes and garlic in a colander.
While the potatoes drain, return the pot to the stove. Add the butter and evaporated milk so the butter begins to melt and the milk begins to warm.
Return the drained potatoes and garlic to the pot. Add salt and pepper to taste. Mash with a potato masher or a handheld electric mixer. Add more milk if needed.
Potato options: Use red or russet potatoes.
Texture: Add more milk if needed when mashing to reach your preferred consistency.
